Rossmoor – Saklan Village

Saklan Village    – Walnut Creek

8 bedrock mortars near the Rossmoor main gate.

There is even a plaque here commemorating the contact period Saklan village at this site on Tice Creek.

This site has an official trinomial: CA-CCO-309. It is far larger than the 1963 excavation indicated and contains components that are deeply buried. The oldest of these components dates back nearly 5,000 years. There is evidence of continuous occupation here for at least 3,000 years prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the Bay Area.

The bedrock mortars are right there by the bench.

Walnut Creek itself is formed when San Ramon Creek and Las Trampas Creek
flow together approximately at Liberty Bell Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek.
Year around fresh water!
Try to imagine the vibrant native population that would have existed here
for countless generations. Mostly paved over and bulldozed now.
